Microsoft has reminded customers that Windows 11 23H2 Enterprise, Education and IoT Enterprise devices will stop receiving security fixes after next month's patch. In a message-center update quoted by BleepingComputer on October 12, 2026, Microsoft names the November 2026 Windows security update as the last one for these editions. Afterward, affected machines will no longer get monthly updates with protection against the latest threats.
Who is affected and what Microsoft recommends
The deadline applies to organizations still running 23H2 on the Enterprise, Education or IoT Enterprise editions. Home and Pro editions of 23H2 already reached end of support in November 2025.
Microsoft's advice is to move eligible 23H2 devices to a supported Windows 11 release. It points to Windows 11 26H2, also called the "Windows 11 2026 Update."
How the move to 26H2 works
According to the report, 26H2 became generally available in September 2026 and is delivered as an enablement package (eKB). Microsoft lists October 2029 as the end of support for its consumer editions.
The rollout is phased. Eligible devices with the "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" setting turned on receive the update automatically. Microsoft says it downloads and installs on its own and finishes with a single restart.
Administrators or users who don't want to wait can check manually under Settings > Windows Update by selecting "Check for updates." When the device is ready, the option "Download and install Windows 11, version 26H2" appears.
Other lifecycle changes in the same coverage
BleepingComputer places the 23H2 reminder among several recent Microsoft lifecycle announcements:
- Windows 10: earlier in 2026, Microsoft extended the free Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for home users until October 2027.
- Windows Server 2022: it leaves mainstream support and moves to extended support, which runs until October 14, 2031.
- Windows 11 24H2: Home and Pro editions stop receiving updates, while Enterprise and Education remain under mainstream support until October 2027.
- Certificate rotation: Microsoft also announced that devices running unsupported Windows versions will stop receiving security updates after next year's Windows Update certificate rotation.
Teams that still have 23H2 Enterprise, Education or IoT Enterprise machines have until the November 2026 security update to complete the upgrade. After that, those devices will be without security patches.
